01What it does

What Answer Als does

Mission

To find solutions for people living with als now and for the future by utilizing knowledge of patients, leading researchers and technology to seek immediate solutions to improve the lives of those living with als until a treatment or cure is found; discover what causes als; develop models to understand als and screen for drug and cellular therapy; discover therapies that could substantially slow or halt the progress of als and ultimately cure the disease; provide all gathered information free for worldwide use by clinicians, scientists and pharma to rapidly advance therapeutics.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. Creating the largest and most comprehensive foundation of als data ever amassed, encompansing clinical, chemical, genetic, protein, historical and biological data from an enormous sampling of als patients in the united states. In collaboration with machine learning and big data technology, the data will be mined to uncover als causes, subtypes, pathways gone awry and drug targets. This will establish a large and critical foundation for new clinical trials, develop new ways to categorize patients to identify specific druggable pathways and subtype biomarkers and disease pathophysiology to aid not only in early diagnosis of the disease, but also to monitor the efficacy of newly developed treatments.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 6 funders to 17 funders, grant income rose $61k → $1.3M.

21 of 49 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 52% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of ANSWER ALS’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 49 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

ANSWER ALS leans on a few funders — its largest provides 40% of grant income and the top three 71%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

55% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund ANSWER ALS.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

23% of ANSWER ALS's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 39% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Where its funders are

52% of ANSWER ALS's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $4.4M that is directly attributable, 99% of it comes from funders outside Louisiana, across 15 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $4.7M arriving through sponsors registered in 13 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
