01What it does

What Live It Learn It does

Mission

LILI partners with public schools and cultural institutions to create and deliver experiential learning opportunities for students in order to increase their self-efficacy, build on their intrinsic motivation, and support their scholarly achievements.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. Live It Learn It (LILI) envisions a day when all learners feel empowered and motivated to engage with the world. We work alongside students, educators, and community partners to build meaningful connections between students in Washington, DCs Title I schools and the museums, landmarks, and historic sites that reflect the richness of their city. We recognize that due to systemic inequities, students in under-resourced communities have had unequal access to out-of-classroom learning opportunities that deepen academic engagement and foster a sense of belonging. In partnership with schools and cultural institutions, we expand access to immersive, place-based learning experiences that connect students to their communities and make classroom learning more relevant. Live It Learn It served approximately 1,809 DC students during the 202425 school year. Since 2005, LILI has served more than 28,000 2nd5th grade students and their teachers in Washington, DCs Title I schools through experiential learning that connects students with local historical, cultural, and environmental sites. Our model centers on facilitating thoughtfully designed field experiences that are directly connected to…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 5 funders to 15 funders, grant income rose $118k → $380k.

7 of 35 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 53% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Live It Learn It’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 35 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Live It Learn It leans on a few funders — its largest provides 50% of grant income and the top three 70%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

56% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Live It Learn It.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

35% of Live It Learn It's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 60% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

53% of Live It Learn It's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $1.3M that is directly attributable, 75% of it comes from funders outside Washington, D.C., across 13 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.5M arriving through sponsors registered in 6 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
