01What it does

What Children's Healing Art Project Inc does

Mission

Children's healing art project (chap) brings the healing power of art to children through a mobile team of teaching artists working in partnership with hospitals, community organizations and schools.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Hospital programs/chap in a box: in 2025, chap provided 3,312 healing art experiences (haes) through our in-patient art program, across 6 different hospital locations. These sessions, led by chap's hospital teaching artists, allow the kids to use chap's high quality art materials in any way they please, free of charge. Children and their families are allowed take a moment away from the often sterile and scary hospital environment and tap into their emotions and communicate their feelings visually, surrounding themselves with color, sparkles, and fun. During 2025, chap had a staff of 6 employees working the equivalent of 3 full-time employees. Across all programs, chap provided a total of 5,686 healing art experiences (haes) and 292 volunteers donated 3,688 hours of service in 2025. Continued on schedule o. Additionally, in 2025 chap delivered 226 chap-in-a box (ciab) packages full of new art supplies to children and their siblings who live outside the portland area and cannot attend chap's local outpatient art-club. Recipients include, low-income families, and underserved children. Ciab helps to continue the healing art experience beyond the hospital setting.

  2. Art club / open studio/art parties: art club is an extension of the chap in-patient hospital art-making programs and is open, for free, to any child experiencing a medical or mental health challenge. We also invite siblings and families to join. We hold art club at the chap studio twice per week. It's a wonderful way for kids and their families to express themselves, enjoy getting creative, make some messy art, and continue developing the support networks and relationships established in the hospital. Our studio space also provides twice yearly inclusive art workshops and in-studio summer camps, open to children (and their siblings) facing medical challenges.

Examples of outreach partners from 2025 include shriners, irco (immigrant and refugee community organization), doernbecher memorial, smile, shriners art club, camp agape, camp erin, strut your kidney, autism walk, down syndrome dsno walk, outside the art room, art house 23 and camp ukandu. Chap is working to develop new partnerships with clinics and nonprofits who serve children facing medical issues and/or who are marginalized or underserved.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 5 funders to 13 funders, grant income rose $42k → $109k.

7 of 28 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 32% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of CHILDREN'S HEALING ART PROJECT INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

CHILDREN'S HEALING ART PROJECT INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 19% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

53% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund CHILDREN'S HEALING ART PROJECT INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

44% of CHILDREN'S HEALING ART PROJECT INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 46% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $293k arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
