01What it does

What East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation does

Mission

We envision an east bay where everyone has a place to call home, children can access quality education, residents can obtain good jobs, families can enjoy welcoming public spaces, and neighbors can enjoy culture and creativity.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. We are proud to be oakland rooted and oakland grown. When we began in 1975, we grew out of community activism taking place to address the displacement and disruption threatening oakland's chinatown at that time. We help strengthen our community fabric so people can connect with each other and grow together. We partner with residents and local leaders to co-create neighborhood solutions so everyone plays a role in shaping our future. We also preserve housing that is currently affordable and stabilize existing rents to prevent large rent increases so that residents can remain in their homes. To date, we have preserved 257 units of affordable housing, developed over 2,200 units of affordable housing in oakland and across the east bay, and served more than 6,000 people annually through comprehensive services for low-income households and individuals.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 15 funders to 20 funders, grant income rose $2.1M → $2.5M.

10 of 60 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 25% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of EAST BAY ASIAN LOCAL DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 60 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

EAST BAY ASIAN LOCAL DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 22% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

60% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund EAST BAY ASIAN LOCAL DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $5.9M arriving through sponsors registered in 6 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
