01What it does

What Wolf Conservation Center Inc does

Mission

The wolf conservation center (wcc) is an environmental education organization working to advance the survival of wolves by inspiring a global community through education, advocacy, research, and participating in the federal recovery and release programs for two critically endangered wolf species - the mexican gray wolf and red wolf. The wcc's two education wolves reside on exhibit where they help teach the public about wolves and their vital role in the environment. Through wolves, the wcc teaches the broader message of conservation, ecological balance, and personal responsibility for improved human stewardship of our world.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. Wild release - endangered wolf recoverythe wcc continues to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the critically endangered red wolves and endangered mexican gray wolves entrusted to its care. And while most wolves born in captivity spend their lives there, 12 mexican gray wolf pups born at the wolf conservation center have been given the extraordinary opportunity to live in the wild in their ancestral range. Most recently, five pups born in 2024 were fostered into wild mexican gray wolf dens in new mexico.at just under 14 days old, the pups were flown to new mexico and successfully placed in a wild den through a process known as "pup-fostering." pup-fostering is a coordinated effort between the mexican gray wolf interagency field team (ift) and the mexican wolf saving animals from extinction program and is a technique employed to enhance the genetic health of the wild gene pool of mexican wolves. Captive-born pups are introduced into a similar-aged wild litter so the pups can grow up as wild wolves and aid in the recovery of their endangered species.according to u.s. Fish and wildlife service (usfws) mexican gray wolves within the wild population are as related to one…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 11 funders to 38 funders, grant income rose $150k → $616k.

17 of 124 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 23% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of WOLF CONSERVATION CENTER INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 124 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

WOLF CONSERVATION CENTER INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 11% of grant income, and it takes 9 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 9 funders to its left

37% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund WOLF CONSERVATION CENTER INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.0M arriving through sponsors registered in 14 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
