Mission

The SPCA of Texas is dedicated to providing every animal exceptional care and a loving home.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Animal shelters, rehabilitation and adoptions: founded in 1938, the SPCA of Texas is a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal welfare organization that operates two animal shelters and a rescue center: the dallas animal care center in west dallas, the ellis county animal care center in waxahachie, and the russell e. Dealey animal rescue center in west dallas, texas. These facilities provide shelter, rehabilitation, and care for animals in need, which come to the SPCA of Texas from a variety of sources, including strays from unincorporated dallas county and ellis county, rescued by and awarded to the SPCA of Texas in cases of abuse or neglect, transferred from municipal shelters and rescue groups, surrendered by their owners, and transferred from other shelters in the wake of natural disasters. The SPCA of Texas does not place time limits on animals accepted by its shelters and does not euthanize animals for lack of space. The shelters also serve as adoption centers where the public can meet and adopt pets. Adoptable shelter pets are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and kept healthy and happy by SPCA of Texas shelter veterinarians, medical staff, behavior staff, shelter staff,…

  2. Public veterinary clinics and pet resource center: the SPCA of Texas operates one low-cost veterinary clinic, the myron k. Martin spay/neuter and wellness clinic in west dallas. The clinic provides high-quality services at low costs so everyone can afford to care for their pet. SPCA of Texas veterinarians and medical teams spay or neuter, vaccinate, and microchip every adoptable animal in its animal shelters, and also provide services to pet owners in need with free or low-cost services through its russell h. Perry pet resource center, at the clinic, and mobile vaccine clinics. In addition, the pet resource center partners with individuals, other animal welfare organizations, and community partners to provide free food and other services to under-resourced people and their pets. In 2024, the SPCA of Texas' veterinary and pet resource center programs helped make life better for pets and the people who love them by providing more than 7,500 wellness visits, more than 10,000 spay or neuter surgeries, and almost 200,000 pounds of free food.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 64 funders to 79 funders, grant income fell $3.6M → $1.6M.

30 of 211 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 70% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of SPCA of Texas’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 211 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

SPCA of Texas leans on a few funders — its largest provides 35% of grant income and the top three 61%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

79% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund SPCA of Texas.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

33% of SPCA of Texas's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 53% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

70% of SPCA of Texas's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $7.7M that is directly attributable, 56% of it comes from Texas funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $18M arriving through sponsors registered in 19 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
