01What it does

What Canines With a Cause does

Mission

The mission of Canines With a Cause is to harness the untapped potential of shelter dogs to heal emotional and psychological wounds, provide unconditional love, support and companionship, and give a new leash on life to those in need through assistance, therapy or service dog work. Making a difference, one person and one dog at a time!

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. Transforming two lives at once, Canines With a Cause (CWAC) pairs rescued dogs with veterans affected by PTSD (PTSD), TBI, and MST, offering complimentary, personalized training classes to form psychiatric service dog teams. To accomplish this, CWAC begins by identifying suitable canine candidates from local animal shelters and rescue organizations. We select dogs with the ideal temperament and traits, then adopt and place them in either our prison program, a foster home, or, in some cases, the veteran-in-waiting. This pre-training process prepares both the dog and the veteran for a successful partnership. CWAC also collaborated with the Walter Reed Military Hospital Soldier Rehabilitation Program and the Uniformed Services University's Wounded Warrior Service Dog Program, working to facilitate the provision of service dogs to military beneficiaries and veterans. This partnership aimed to share best practices in service dog training and education. Unfortunately, the program faced setbacks, including the suspension of the Utah prison program due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the termination of the Walter Reed program's funding in 2025 due to budget cuts. This has forced CWAC to…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 6 funders to 16 funders, grant income rose $58k → $238k.

10 of 40 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 21% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Canines With a Cause’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 40 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Canines With a Cause has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 25% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

54% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Canines With a Cause.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $194k arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
