What New Kensington Community Development Corp does

Mission

NKCDC advances social equity and economic empowerment by nurturing and creating opportunities for neighbors to live in, and actively shape, their neighborhoods of choice. (See Schedule O)

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. Planning: By constantly engaging with neighborhood residents in an ongoing "Co-Creating Kensington" process, we learn about the community's hopes, concerns, and priorities and use them to raise funds and organize our work. We also work to help keep residents informed about legal, regulatory, political, and policy issues that may impact their lives. This continuous dialogue is the foundation of our work and forces us to be accountable, guiding our strategic plans as well as more specialized efforts such as a greening plan currently in progress. Economic development: NKCDC supports small business development in order to create jobs and community wealth. We assist start up and existing businesses, maintain an inventory of available property, help local entrepreneurs identify and obtain services and funding, support pop-up markets, staff the Kensington Business Coalition, and clean the commercial corridors 6 days a week. Housing counseling: NKCDC works to expand homeownership opportunities for working families. Since 1985, NKCDC has helped more than 4000 low and moderate income families purchase their first homes. We offer homebuyer workshops, energy assistance, financial literacy,…

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 5 funders to 9 funders, grant income rose $426k → $516k.

6 of 34 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 5% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of New Kensington Community Development Corp’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 34 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

New Kensington Community Development Corp leans on a few funders — its largest provides 37% of grant income and the top three 71%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

87% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund New Kensington Community Development Corp.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $570k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
