01What it does

What Lancaster General Health Foundation does

Mission

The Lancaster General Health Foundation is organized and operated to benefit, perform the functions of, or carry out the purposes of members of the healthcare system of lancaster general health, a non-profit corporation described in section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code, including lancaster general hospital, lancaster general medical group, the heart group of lancaster general health, and lancaster general health columbia center, each of which is a section 501(c)(3) organization and a public charity described in either section 509(a)(1) or section 509(a)(2) of the code.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. The foundation raises funds to support the work of the healthcare system of lancaster general health. Thanks to generous community donors, the foundation has helped fund innovative new treatments, support patients in need, strengthen the level of care, and improve the patient experience to raise the collective bar for healthcare services in the lancaster region. All gifts to the foundation stay local, and 100% of donations go to the funding area intended by the donor. This means the foundation can significantly impact funding cancer research, expanding pediatric care, increasing behavioral health services, and providing more access to women's health services.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 6 funders to 11 funders, grant income rose $115k → $361k.

11 of 35 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 30% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $75k from one payer (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Jewish Communal Fund). These are real filings, and they are not money LANCASTER GENERAL HEALTH FOUNDATION raised.

From the IRS filings of LANCASTER GENERAL HEALTH FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 35 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

LANCASTER GENERAL HEALTH FOUNDATION has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 38% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

43% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund LANCASTER GENERAL HEALTH FOUNDATION.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

23% of LANCASTER GENERAL HEALTH FOUNDATION's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 49% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.6M arriving through sponsors registered in 8 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
