01What it does

What Coexistence Story Inc does

Mission

We harness the power of creativity and storytelling to inspire the human race to share space. Through creative initiatives and cultural collaborations, we promote coexistence with wildlife, restore habitats, and fund programs that deepen relationships between people, elephants, and other wild species. In 2024, coexistence story advanced this mission through a partnership with the indigenous art enterprise, the real elephant collective, a high-profile us public environmental art exhibition and grants to conservation partners globally.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Promoting coexistence the great elephant migration: coexistence story's flagship creative initiative, the great elephant migration, was designed as a comprehensive communications and public awareness building campaign, sharing indigenous perspectives on elephants as sentient beings and fostering deeper understanding of human-wildlife coexistence. In partnership with art & newport, the campaign combined a high-visibility environmental art exhibition with strategic education and outreach to engage millions of people who may not otherwise engage with human-wildlife conservation stories.the great elephant migration was a year-long 5,000-mile journey that brought an indigenous-led cultural and environmental story into some of the most visible public spaces in the united states. The exhibition launched in newport (rhode island), before moving to new york city and miami beach, with additional stops planned in houston, browning (montana), jackson (wyoming), and los angeles in 2025.stop 1: newport, rhode island, july 4 - september 1. 2. Powering coexistence - the grants: coexistence story supported human-wildlife coexistence efforts across africa, asia, and europe through partnerships with dedicated conservation organizations. Lion guardians: $150,000empowering communities in the amboseli to coexist peacefully with lions, blending traditional knowledge and science-based solutions. Their efforts have reduced lion killings by more than 90% in the amboseli-tsavo ecosystem. Funds supported a community awareness campaign against wildlife poisoning, the creation of a mobile veterinary unit for lions, elephants, and livestock, and the development of new conflict-mitigation technology to enhance coexistence.wild bird fund: $10,000the wild bird fund is new york city's only rehabilitation center for birds, caring for thousands of injured birds each year. Together we expanded public education on coexistence, from bird-proofing buildings to preventing vehicle collisions, creating a safer city for millions of migrating birds which pass through each year. 3. Perpetuating coexistence - indigenous art enterprise: we are the primary partner to the real elephant collective, an indigenous art enterprise based in the nilgiri biosphere reserve. Powered by the soliga, bettakurumba, kattunayakan, and paniya communities, who live alongside the wild elephants in the great elephant migration herd, the collective brought their story of coexistence to life. In partnership with trec, coexistence story developed the idea of a herd of 100 life-sized elephant sculptures, crafted from the invasive weed lantana camara, to migrate across cities in the united states - transforming an environmental challenge into a platform for cultural storytelling and conservation messaging. Our role was to conceptualize the public art model, provide seed funding, deliver the exhibit and connect markets. The artisans' empathy, respect, and understanding of these giants enabled them to replicate the elephants with remarkable accuracy, generating approximately $680,000 in revenue for the collective in 2024. In 2024, the number of elephant-making units across the nilgiri hills grew significantly, increasing the number of artisans from 200 to 300, making it india's largest…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base narrowed from 3 funders to 1 funder, grant income fell $92k → $1k.

12 of 33 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 67% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of COEXISTENCE STORY INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 33 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

COEXISTENCE STORY INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 32% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

67% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund COEXISTENCE STORY INC.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 54% · 2018 33% · 2019 72% · 2020 37% · 2021 60% · 2022 95% · 2023 100% — growing more concentrated.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

7% of COEXISTENCE STORY INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 18% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

67% of COEXISTENCE STORY INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $283k that is directly attributable, 90% of it comes from funders outside New York, across 14 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $575k arriving through sponsors registered in 11 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
