01What it does

What Zioness Movement Inc does

Mission

To provide a political home for american jews who are both progressive and zionist

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

On its FY2024 return the organization reported starting a significant new program.

Zahav fellowship - the zahav fellowship is a transformative leadership program for black jewish zionists, designed to uplift their intersecting identities and foster jewish self-determination and democracy. Through intimate cohort experiences and global thought leadership, fellows engage in identity exploration, communal resilience, and social impact. Now a 10-month program, zahav includes a capstone project and prepares participants to lead in both jewish and broader justice movements. Zioness pride fellowship -the pride fellowship is a three-month initiative that engages queer communities in critical conversations about israel, and antisemitism. It aims to build advocacy skills, foster coalition-building, and empower lgbtq+ leaders from underrepresented jewish backgrounds. Fellows gained tools to combat anti-zionism and antisemitism in their queer spaces, while forming strong networks to bolster their advocacy and confidence.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 2).

  1. Community programming - at the core of the zioness mission is the goal of members engaging across lines of difference on issues they are passionate about. The organizations work in this regard includes building chapters in communities across the country, training local leaders, building relationships with partners, and taking action to help support progressive causes and movements for justice. Organizationally, they organize their members to help others organize their communities.

  2. Online education - as a grassroots organization with a distributed membership model, online education remains a cornerstone of zioness programmatic strategy. In addition to leveraging their website, learning management system, and platforms like zoom, zioness has expanded its focus to include robust training series designed to equip members with the skills needed to confidently engage in the field. These trainings prepare leaders to have constructive, values-driven conversations, stand proudly as zionists in progressive spaces, and build meaningful partnerships rooted in mutual respect and shared goals.

  3. Rapid response - rapid response programmatic efforts are focused on addressing unfolding civic issues in real time. This includes issues impacting the jewish community directly, such as acts of antisemitism. It also includes issues impacting other communities directly, such as acts of anti-black racism. The organizations programming in response to these events will vary, but includes public statements, private partnership outreach, internal member engagement and education, and public events.

  4. In-person events - in order to help expand awareness of zioness, its mission, and the causes it supports, zioness programming includes many events each year. These events occur in person and online and are designed as an onramp to the organization and its work. At times, these events may focus on issues of of concern to the jewish community. Oftentimes, these events are designed to help members deepen their understanding around the issues facing other marginalized communities. This could involve panels, speeches by zioness leadership, virtual webinars, and social gatherings.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base broadened from 12 funders to 29 funders, grant income rose $297k → $1.0M.

17 of 58 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 64% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of ZIONESS MOVEMENT INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 58 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

ZIONESS MOVEMENT INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 18% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

75% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund ZIONESS MOVEMENT INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

60% of ZIONESS MOVEMENT INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 53% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

64% of ZIONESS MOVEMENT INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $2.2M that is directly attributable, 59% of it comes from New York funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $3.9M arriving through sponsors registered in 8 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
