Mission

Education regarding animal cruelty

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. Vegan outreach (vo) is an animal protection organization whose mission is to prevent violence towards animals. Vo educates people about how a vegan lifestyle can prevent animal suffering and death, reduce the environmental impact of food, and improve people's health. This is accomplished primarily by signing people up for our 10 weeks to vegan and get healthy challenges, where they receive ten emails with information on how to eat vegan. They also have access to facebook groups and a mentor program for support. For fiscal year 2025, over 155,000 people signed up for these challenges. We also distribute booklets about veganism at colleges and some high schools; vegan outreach staff and volunteers gave booklets to over 182,000 people at 177 schools. Vo has two registered dietitians on staff who answer nutrition questions from the public and maintain a well-respected website, veganhealth.org, which summarizes the research on vegan nutrition. In fy 2025, our food events department conducted vegan chef challenges, month-long events showcasing new vegan menu items at local non-vegan restaurants, in 29 cities.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 9 funders to 22 funders, grant income rose $166k → $1.6M.

14 of 48 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 55% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of VEGAN OUTREACH INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 48 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

VEGAN OUTREACH INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 41% of grant income and the top three 82%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

58% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund VEGAN OUTREACH INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Where its funders are

55% of VEGAN OUTREACH INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $4.8M that is directly attributable, 83% of it comes from California funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $5.8M arriving through sponsors registered in 11 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
