What Vanderburgh County Humane Society Inc does

Mission

The vanderburgh humane society is committed to the elimination of animal overpopulation in our community, the prevention of animal cruelty and neglect, and the promotion of the animal-human bond.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. In 2024, vhs sheltered 4,048 animals, and achieved a 93% live release rate. Vhs also offers services to the general public in an effort to keep animals in their existing home rather than being surrendered, such as a pet food bank and behavioral training advice. Vhs also works with other rescue organizations for the placement of animals. Over 20,000 pounds of food was distributed through the pet food assistance program.

  2. Vhs operates a low-cost spay/neuter clinic. In 2024, 6,665 spay/neuter surgeries were performed. All animals are altered before being placed in their new home to ensure no breeding occurs once animals leave the shelter. The spay/neuter clinic is open to the public. The shelter significantly underwrites the cost of these surgeries and other services to ensure the surgery is available regardless of income. The clinic also operates as a wellness clinic to provide low-cost medical services to the general public, including vaccinations, microchipping, parasite treatment, and medical testing.

  3. The education and volunteer programs of the vhs reached 5,082 kids in 58 programs in 2024. The programs include tours of the shelter and class room style presentations on being safe around animals, proper care and treatment of animals and a variety of other pet related safety issues. The vhs educators also take presentations to the schools and other group settings where people want to learn more about the shelter or hear pet related topics.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 6 funders to 13 funders, grant income rose $37k → $251k.

6 of 42 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 8% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of VANDERBURGH COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 42 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

VANDERBURGH COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 46% of grant income and the top three 70%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

25% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund VANDERBURGH COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY INC.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $148k arriving through sponsors registered in 6 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
