01What it does

What Nonprofit VOTE Inc does

Mission

Nonprofit VOTE equips our nation's nonprofits with nonpartisan tools and resources to help the communities they serve to participate in voting and democracy. Nonprofit VOTE manages National Voter Registration Day.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Nonprofit VOTE helped nonprofits engage their communities in the voting process. In 2024, we produced tailored voter engagement toolkits for 20 different state nonprofit associations and 7 national organizations. Our Nonprofit Power report documented a 10-point boost in voter turnout following nonprofit engagement. Through our field program, we funded and supported voter engagement at 118 nonprofits across eight states, reaching 239,000 voters. We uplifted the Philanthropy for Voter Engagement toolkit through speaking engagements at 14 gatherings of foundation staff. In all, we hosted or presented at 36 events collectively reaching 5,500 nonprofit and foundation staff with critical democracy tools and resources.

  2. National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) is a civic holiday managed by Nonprofit VOTE. In 2024, we recruited and supported 152 major national partners and 5,600 community partners. Thanks to partner efforts, 820,000 new/updated registrations were generated on NVRD. Prior to the holiday, we provided online toolkits and legal guides to partners, hosted webinars that drew hundreds of attendees, and mailed thousands of partners organizing kits with free event posters and stickers. The event generated significant media coveage across print, TV, radio and social media. Work also included post-event data collection, reporting/evaluation, and initial planning for 2025 and beyond. With related overhead, total expenses amount to $946,757.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 7 funders to 14 funders, grant income rose $434k → $1.0M.

13 of 40 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 44% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Nonprofit VOTE Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 40 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Nonprofit VOTE Inc has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 21% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

51% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Nonprofit VOTE Inc.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $3.8M arriving through sponsors registered in 8 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
