01What it does

What Micah 6 Community does

Mission

Micah 6 Community is a community development organization working to build the neighborhoods that pontiac deserves. We manage community gardens, a produce store that works to fight the food desert, children's programming, community events and meals, and general community support.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Sprout fresh food store - this money supports the daily needs of the sprout building where we have a produce store that provides reduced-priced fruits and vegetables for our neighbors in the middle of a food desert.

    $73,918 spent
    97% of program spending
  2. Webster - in 2016, Micah 6 Community purchased the abandoned webster elementary school to turn into a community center. As the building has been going through development, it is being used as a storage space for programming materials and for other non-profits. It is also building relationships with the neighborhood and the rest of pontiac as micah 6 is developing plans for the community center.

  3. Community houses - provide a place in the neighborhood where neighbors can hang out and come to events, as well as providing housing for some of our full-time volunteers so that they can live intentionally among our neighbors.

  4. We have a variety of free community events throughout the year, we are working to turn an abandoned elementary school into a community center, we raise chickens to give their eggs to neighbors, we host volunteer events where we educate people on life in pontiac, we also have two events a week where we offer free meals in community.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 9 funders, grant income rose $400 → $407k.

12 of 35 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 49% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of MICAH 6 COMMUNITY’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 35 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

MICAH 6 COMMUNITY has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 21% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

69% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund MICAH 6 COMMUNITY.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2018 63% · 2019 100% · 2020 37% · 2021 30% · 2022 66% · 2023 39% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

33% of MICAH 6 COMMUNITY's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 37% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.9M arriving through sponsors registered in 9 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
