What Komera Inc does
Mission
In rwanda, the word "komera" means "be strong, have courage." komera was founded to develop self-confident young women through education, community development, and health programming.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.
Programs
Education: komera sponsors scholars with full room, board, and tuition at a public boarding school in rwanda. During school holidays, scholars attend workshops where they receive training on reproductive health, career, counseling, leadership development and how to be leaders within their communities. Once students finish school, they attend the post-secondary transition program (pstp). The pstp trains them in english, information and communication technology, small business development, and helps them apply to universities. Komera also supports the university education of select scholars.

Komera has a number of programs focused on sexual and reproductive health, emotional support and sport at primary and secondary schools for both boys and girls to come together on an equal playing field, learning gender norms and dynamics of power, and using sport as a tool for confidence building and teamwork.

The komera leadership center opened its doors in august 2022 as the home for komera programming and a hub to serve the nearly 30,000 people in the rural district of kayonza in rwanda. The space features an education hall with vocational training, career guidance, an ict lab, as well as mentorship and leadership support for young women. Community programming addresses challenges faced by youth and families in the community and the center is a shared space for collective activism. The space serves a vulnerable population of teen mothers with a business development program, as well as creates opportunities for families and parents to work on their cooperative businesses. The health post provides essential sexual reproductive health and rights counseling services to women and girls in the community.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2021 to 2022, from $1.1M to $668k (−39%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2021 3% · 2022 4%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
108% of KOMERA INC’s revenue is contributions — more reliant on donations than three-quarters of its peers (57% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 5 funders to 12 funders, grant income rose $78k → $223k.
9 of 46 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 31% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of KOMERA INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 46 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
KOMERA INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 13% of grant income, and it takes 5 funders to reach half.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 5 funders to its left
39% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund KOMERA INC.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 53% · 2018 33% · 2019 32% · 2020 31% · 2021 23% · 2022 28% · 2023 51% — broadly stable.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
35% of KOMERA INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 57% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
KOMERA INC draws 91% of its grant income from funders outside Massachusetts, across 14 states in all.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $831k arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
