01What it does

What Her Justice Inc does

Mission

At her justice, we train and mentor volunteer lawyers to provide free legal help to women living in poverty in new york city as well as address systemic legal barriers our clients face in the courts. Since 1993 her justice has helped women living in poverty in nyc receive critical legal assistance that helps them achieve safety self-sufficiency and stability.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. Founded in 1993, her justice stands with women living in poverty in new york city by recruiting and mentoring volunteer lawyers to provide free legal help to address individual and systemic legal barriers in family, matrimonial and immigration law. Women living in poverty rely on the civil justice system to access basic rights, but they often don't have access to an attorney to help them navigate this prohibitively complicated system. Her justice's continued goal is to improve access to justice by identifying and addressing significant gaps in legal services for economically disadvantaged women, especially those who live in underserved communities isolated by culture and language, providing them with the tools they need to support themselves and their families and thrive. Through our pro bono first model, we pair thousands of volunteer attorneys from more than 100 premier law firms and corporations with women who are unlikely to obtain representation elsewhere. By providing expert training, advice and mentoring to the private bar, her justice leverages its small legal staff to exponentially increase the number of women who go to court with their own lawyers and obtain the legal…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 22 funders to 40 funders, grant income rose $513k → $1.9M.

20 of 103 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 45% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of HER JUSTICE INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 103 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

HER JUSTICE INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 24% of grant income, and it takes 5 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 5 funders to its left

62% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund HER JUSTICE INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $3.9M arriving through sponsors registered in 13 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
