01What it does

What Greater Birmingham Habitat for Humanity Inc does

Mission

Greater birmingham habitat for humanity, inc (the organization) provides affordable housing solutions by constructing new single family houses and revitalizing existing houses. They encourage family stability and promote self sufficiency, educational achievement and responsible citizenship while seeking to eliminate poverty housing.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Homeownership program: families in need of a decent place to live build safe and affordable homes in partnership with us. The organization contructed and/or rehabbed 56 homes during fiscal year ending june 30, 2025 and another 14 homes were in process of construction and/or rehab. Habitat houses are modestly sized. They are large enough for the homeowner family's needs, but small enough to keep construction and maintenance costs affordable. By using the labor of volunteers, prospective homeowners, and dedicated subcontractors, employing efficient building methods, keeping house sizes modest, using donated construction materials and appliances, and issuing no-profit loans, habitat makes its houses affordable for low-income families to purchase. Affordable homeownership helps create the conditions that free families from instability, stress and free and encourage self-reliance and confidence. Studies show that strong and stable households are foundational to child development and growth. When a home fosters and provides health and safety families can flourish. Owning an affordable home also allows homeowners to lift up their entire family by providing opportunities to save for their…

  2. Critical repair program: our critical repair program is an outreach initiative that seeks to provide a wide range of opportunities for low-to-moderate-income homeowners, including veterans and seniors, who are struggling to maintain their homes because of age, disability or family circumstances. We partner with families to help them reclaim their homes with pride and dignity. The program allows families to stay in their home and avoid the uncertainty, trauma and expense of moving. Projects consist of interior and/or exterior repairs intended to alleviate critical health, life and safety issues or code violations. Volunteer teams work along with subcontractors under the direction of habitat's team members to complete the repairs. In the fiscal year ending june 30, 2025, we served 259 homeowners and their families.

  3. The restore is a discount home improvement center that sells new and used home improvement items to the public and funds are used to provide affordable housing solutions. In addition, the restore furthers the habitat mission by allowing families who do not have the funds toafford typical rehab opportunities to be able to fix up their own homes and has an environmental component by keeping items that would typically end up in a landfill in use. Our partner families are required to serve in the restore to learn valuable skills about customer service and home repair.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 7 funders to 14 funders, grant income rose $751k → $1.0M.

9 of 33 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 16% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of GREATER BIRMINGHAM HABITAT FOR HUMANITY INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 33 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

GREATER BIRMINGHAM HABITAT FOR HUMANITY INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 47% of grant income and the top three 71%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

88% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund GREATER BIRMINGHAM HABITAT FOR HUMANITY INC.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $901k arriving through sponsors registered in 8 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
