01What it does

What Grand Traverse Bay YMCA does

Mission

To put judeo-christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. The y is a leading voice on health and well being. We bring families closer together, encourage good health, and foster connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result, hundreds of people in our community are receiving the support, guidance, and resources they need to achieve greater health in spirit, mind, and body. This is particularly important as our nation struggles with an obesity crisis, families struggle with work/life balance, and individuals search for personal fulfillment. Our programs are accessible, affordable, and open to all faiths, backgrounds, abilities, and income levels. In 2025, we provided over $228,000 in financial assistance to people who otherwise may not have been able to afford to participate.

  2. Our ymca is committed to nurturing the potential of every child and teen. We believe that all youth deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That's why we help young people cultivate the values, skills, and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, and educational achievement. Our ymca programs, such as our after-school program, summer camp and child development center, offer a range of experiences that enrich cognitive, social, physical, and emotional growth. Expenses include subsidies and direct financial assistance that make participation possible for serving over 500 children.

  3. Our ymca believes in giving back and supporting our neighbors. We have been listening and responding to our community's most critical social needs for many years. Y programs, such as youth swim lessons, middle school after school care, and the safety around water programs, are examples of how we deliver training, resources, and support that empower neighbors to effect change, bridge gaps, and overcome obstacles.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 3 funders to 6 funders, grant income rose $96k → $665k.

7 of 17 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 18% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of GRAND TRAVERSE BAY YMCA’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

GRAND TRAVERSE BAY YMCA leans on a few funders — its largest provides 29% of grant income and the top three 67%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

49% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund GRAND TRAVERSE BAY YMCA.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

33% of GRAND TRAVERSE BAY YMCA's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 65% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $616k arriving through sponsors registered in 6 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
