01What it does

What Gold Country Wildlife Rescue Inc does

Mission

Rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing injured, sick and orphaned wildlife while advancing public awareness and understanding of the critical role of wildlife within the ecosystems we share.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. California has some of the most abundant and diverse wildlife in the U.S.; this is a source of pride and multiple benefits for the state. With this wealth, however, comes a responsibility, to protect our native wildlife, who need our help now more than ever. Wildfires, climate change, drought and habitat loss threaten every species and have dramatically increased the numbers of animals requiring treatment annually. In 1991, the year that Gold Country Wildlife Rescue was founded, the population of Placer County was 180,000 people. At that time GCWR handled approximately 300 animals annually.Today, the County's population has more than doubled, now exceeding 410,300 people. At the same time, the demands on GCWR have increased twelve-fold, with 3,700 animals cared for in 2020, and more than 12,000 calls from people needing assistance with wildlife. In 2023, these numbers further increased with almost 4,000 animals cared for and almost 13,500 phone calls. But that's not the whole story. Compounding the impact of the growing demand for care (and resources) is an increase in the severity of the animals injuries seen. This results in a requirement for more extensive and continuous care…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 7 funders to 16 funders, grant income rose $38k → $248k.

11 of 39 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 66% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Gold Country Wildlife Rescue Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 39 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Gold Country Wildlife Rescue Inc has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 20% of grant income, and it takes 5 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 5 funders to its left

69% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Gold Country Wildlife Rescue Inc.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

66% of Gold Country Wildlife Rescue Inc's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.3M arriving through sponsors registered in 9 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
