01What it does

What Generative Somatics does

Mission

To grow transformative social and environmental justice movements. One that integrates personal and social transformation and creates compelling alternatives to the status quo.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. To support social and environmental justice movements in a year of intense organizing, in 2024 GS increased free/donation-based and accessible offerings for movement leaders, organizers, cultural workers, and politicized healers. In 2024, GS continued to offer daily practice space for the 3rd year in a row. GS daily practice space is led by BIPOC practitioners every week day (251 days) for 30 minutes. 40 - 70 new people register for daily practice space every month. In 2024, GS launched monthly regional in-person practice spaces in 3 key organizing cities - Durham, Los Angeles, and Oakland. Each practice space is led by 2-3 practitioners and is attended monthly by over 25 local organizers, healers, and cultural workers as a space for their own healing and transformation and to connect to others and build relationships. Additionally, GS offered a dozen online somatic groups for healing for organizers. These were attended by 40-70 people each. In 2024, GS also invested in the training and development of practitioners so that they were better resourced to serve movements and movement leaders, this included over a 176 hours of lead teachership training with an in-person multi-day…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 5 funders to 8 funders, grant income fell $321k → $265k.

15 of 27 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 54% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of GENERATIVE SOMATICS’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

GENERATIVE SOMATICS has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 20% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

55% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund GENERATIVE SOMATICS.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

32% of GENERATIVE SOMATICS's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 63% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

54% of GENERATIVE SOMATICS's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $1.7M that is directly attributable, 54% of it comes from California funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $2.0M arriving through sponsors registered in 9 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
