01What it does

What Conquering Congenital Heart Disease does

Mission

At conquering chd we exist to conquerin the most common birth defect. We engage, listen, learn, and act. We create visibility and empower all impacted by chd. We accomplish this through awareness, knowledge, community and research.

As stated on its FY2023 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Learning your child has congenital heart disease can be overwhelming. Many children with congenital heart disease need life saving surgery or intervention in the first few weeks or months of their life. This leads to important medical decisions about the care of your child, often in a short amount of time and under stress. However, the ability to get important information about where your child will get their treatment is limited. The organization is working to address this issue on many levels. We empower patients and families directly through the use of the guided questions tool. Given to families at the time of diagnosis, this list of questions offers support and confidence when talking to doctors, surgeons and the care team about quality, what to expect when in the hospital, and beyond. Although widely distributed.

  2. The organization continues to grow our direct impact through the implementation of a state chapter infrastructure. While independent entities, our state chapters are provided with administrative and leadership support, branded resources, core care package materials and group exemption through the national organization. This program was discontinued december 2023.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 6 funders, grant income rose $13k → $24k.

6 of 22 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 47% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of CONQUERING CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

CONQUERING CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 28% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

91% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund CONQUERING CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

9% of CONQUERING CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 36% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $111k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
