01What it does

What Community Thread does

Mission

Promote and support community volunteerism by providing resources

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. The Thrive Program was established in April 2022 to assist older adults and individuals with disabilities living in the Stillwater Area. By engaging volunteers, this membership-based program helps fill requests for basic home assistance, such as cleaning, with the goal of making it easier for individuals to remain living at home. The program engages volunteer drivers who take people to and from needed appointments and to access community services. This program is available to all eligible residents of Stillwater School District 834 and anyone unable to pay the membership fee is subsidized. The program also provides referrals and connections to resources for the public at large and offers the amenities of two Community Centers. These centers provide programs and activities that enhance the well-being of older adults. The Stillwater site also offers free income tax preparation assistance and other services in partnership with other nonprofit organizations.

  2. The Volunteer Center serves individuals and organizations through four primary functions: connecting people to opportunities to serve through a searchable database of volunteer opportunities; building capacity for local volunteering by providing training and support in volunteer management to local nonprofit organizations; promoting volunteerism in the community; and providing special community-wide service initiatives. For example, for over 50 years Community Thread has been providing help during the holidays through the Holiday Hope program (formerly Holiday Bureau). The program serves families, people with disabilities, and older adults by matching them with sponsors who provide gifts. The program passes through in-kind gifts to program recipients.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 5 funders to 15 funders, grant income rose $59k → $433k.

9 of 29 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 6% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of COMMUNITY THREAD’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

COMMUNITY THREAD leans on a few funders — its largest provides 43% of grant income and the top three 74%; half comes from just 2 funders.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

69% of COMMUNITY THREAD's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 55% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $176k arriving through sponsors registered in 8 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
