What United Way Suncoast Inc does

Mission

United way suncoast's mission is to mobilize communities to action so all can thrive. (continued on schedule o)

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Financial security we know that across our five-county region, 45% or 658,473 families earn below the alice threshold, a nationwide marker for financial health. From this threshold, a family with two adults and two children in childcare needs to make over $100,000 to get by financially across our region. To address these hundreds of thousands of families, united way suncoast rallies around building stronger financial security for everyone. United way suncoast concentrates on ensuring our alice families have access to financial services and support as well as career opportunities that lead to a family sustaining wage that creates a path to financial security. (continued on schedule o)this is accomplished by providing access to certificate programs or higher education degrees, help individuals retain and sustain their assets including access to benefits, safe and affordable banking, and sound financial knowledge, and by removing systemic barriers to increase access to financial support. In addition, united way suncoast has invested $6.4 million over the last three years with 34 nonprofit partners focused on helping community members obtain long term employment, keeping and…

  2. Educational opportunity when a young child enters kindergarten ready for school, there is an 82% chance that child will master basic skills by age 11, compared with a 45% chance for children who are not school ready. United way suncoast concentrates on ensuring children enter kindergarten ready to learn by strengthening caregivers as their child's first teacher, providing early learning educators with professional development opportunities, and enhancing early learning centers to provide high-impact tools to strengthen school readiness. (continued on schedule o)over the last three years, our multi-year investment strategy has led to more than 7,000 students arriving on the first day of kindergarten with the needed social and emotional skills. With the aim of improving third-grade literacy, we ensure school-age children have the support they need by collaborating with our respective school districts to provide additional in-school support and access to before- and after-school programs. Since 2022, we have helped more than 10,000 students read on level or show progress by third grade. We're also helping more children attend summer programs to combat summer learning backslide. In…

  3. Community resiliency community resiliency encompasses capacity building and disaster resiliency. Capacity building leverages our expertise to support, enhance and invest in our nonprofit partners. Disaster resiliency is our commitment to proactive preparation and response to disasters and emerging challenges. Capacity building is best defined as investment. That is because our investments in partner programs and capacity building efforts yield a return for the community. Every dollar we invest in increasing the capacity of our partners returns a value of $2.75 to the community. (continued on schedule o)we have built our capacity building efforts on a foundation of care that is data-informed, and people-focused. To achieve high quality community impact, our investment strategy includes supporting the development and growth of the people running our partner programs as well as sharing our expertise and eliminating our partners' administrative barriers. Instead of just asking our partners about their plans for sustainability, we contribute to it: our partners leveraged an additional $7.7 million through additional grants and donations as a direct result of our investment. 4. R.I.s.e united way suncoast is entrusted with a 100-year beacon that demands our best. That light and our decades of success prompted philanthropist mackenzie scott to donate $20 million dollars to the organization in december of 2020. Through thoughtful determination, united way suncoast created the r.I.s.e. (reach, invest, support and empower) task force and a blueprint that aligns with its new strategic plan while staying focused on the key impact areas outlined above: educational opportunity and financial security. We have infused what we now call our rise dollars into our work instead of squirreling them away in a bank account. In 2022, we invested more than $3 million dollars with 16 strategic partners to help more than 6,000 families avoid eviction or find new stable housing in the last two years. We also provided $1.3 million in direct assistance to help families with rent, mortgage, and utilities. The investment helped us leverage an additional $1.9 million dollars in emergency rental assistance funds, government funds, and private funds for a total impact of more than $5 million dollars. Rise dollars also were invested to help with mid- and long-term recovery from…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 24 funders to 51 funders, grant income rose $3.1M → $3.8M.

20 of 115 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 75% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $8.8M from 29 payers (the payer shares this organization's board, largest United Way of Florida Inc). These are real filings, and they are not money UNITED WAY SUNCOAST INC raised.

From the IRS filings of UNITED WAY SUNCOAST INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 115 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

UNITED WAY SUNCOAST INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 42% of grant income and the top three 65%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

83% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund UNITED WAY SUNCOAST INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

55% of UNITED WAY SUNCOAST INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 61% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Where its funders are

75% of UNITED WAY SUNCOAST INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $12M that is directly attributable, 56% of it comes from Florida funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $36M arriving through sponsors registered in 14 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
