01What it does

What Thehopeline Inc does

Mission

Our mission is to reach, rescue and restore those who are broken and hopeless. We encourage people in the midst of their struggles by providing clear thinking and right values. This is accomplished through media of all types which are primarily served from the organization's proprietary web- based platform.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. Live Chat interactions are taken by paid Hope Coaches who are trained and evaluated on a regular basis for effectiveness. Live Chat was relaunched in 2018 with new leadership and funded from gifts restricted for use to this program. It was staffed with an average of 369 Hope Coach hours per week. Each one-on-one interaction included referrals to one or more vetted partners who offer targeted services or relevant information for specific issues. The Organization has more than 25 of these partnerships. Hope Coaches have answered 27,435 chats, which is 35% of all chats attempted. Beginning in September 2022, Live Chat was expanded to 24/7. By the end of 2025, there were 40 Hope Coaches who answered 31,823 live chats, which is 70% of all live chat attempts. 3,589 (11.3%) of this total were suicide interventions.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 5 funders to 10 funders, grant income fell $839k → $109k.

13 of 21 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 54% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of THEHOPELINE INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

THEHOPELINE INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 33% of grant income and the top three 66%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

87% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund THEHOPELINE INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

54% of THEHOPELINE INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $1.4M that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside Tennessee, across 8 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.7M arriving through sponsors registered in 11 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
