What National Underground Railroad Freedom Center Inc does

Mission

To reveal stories about freedom's heroes, from the era of the underground railroad to contemporary times, challenging and inspiring everyone to take courageous steps for freedom today.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Museum operation: to provide a positive conduit for the public dissemination on the impact of slavery and human trafficking within the united states. This is accomplished through the effective use of high-tech interactive permanent exhibitions, rotating traveling exhibitions, and a collection of owned and borrowed artifacts, including an authentic 19th century slave pen from mason county, kentucky. The museum also features a full service genealogical library, a gift shop offering fair-trade international and domestic goods, a teacher resource and education center, and multi-purpose classroom space.

  3. Community: to form partnerships within the community with like purpose entities and to host community forums and partner programs that will benefit our constituents and further the mission of the freedom center. Partnerships with for-profit and non-profit entities enable the freedom center to expand the resources and the reach of its purpose, including the awareness of the six contemporary unfreedoms: racism, illiteracy, genocide, hunger, tyranny, and slavery.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 8 funders to 14 funders, grant income rose $327k → $1.2M.

7 of 50 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 7% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $10M from 4 payers (the payer shares this organization's board, largest The Greater Cincinnati Foundation). These are real filings, and they are not money NATIONAL UNDERGROUND RAILROAD FREEDOM CENTER INC raised.

Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $434k arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
