01What it does

What Maine Needs Inc does

Mission

We strive to help individuals and families in Maine meet their basic, material needs by providing donated clothing, hygiene products, household items, and other necessities. We focus our work on those starting life over from scratch: domestic abuse survivors, asylum seekers and those facing financial hardships. We partner with schools, caseworkers, nurses and nonprofits to provide these material resources.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. Maine Needs organically grew out of people in the community coming together on social media to organize and deliver household donations to help those facing financial hardship. Examples of people helped by Maine Needs are homeless individuals setting up a new place to live, domestic abuse survivors, low-income families, and others that are essentially starting their lives over from scratch. Maine Needs is overseen by a volunteer board of directors. Maine Needs activities are carried out by dozens of volunteers, with hundreds in the community donating to Maine Needs to help others. Many donations are coordinated online through social media. Maine Needs has set up donation shopping facilities for those in need by utilizing spare space from a local nonprofit and by coordinating to deliver needed items to existing community centers (e.g., churches or food pantries), school supply closets for children in need, and similar spaces where those facing financial hardship can get household items, warm coats, etc. By coordinating with existing community resources, Maine Needs helps fill in the gaps to serve the community. For example, if a school needs warm children's coats and mittens in a…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 32 funders, grant income rose $30k → $212k.

10 of 78 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 53% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Maine Needs Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 78 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Maine Needs Inc has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 19% of grant income, and it takes 6 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 6 funders to its left

55% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Maine Needs Inc.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

69% of Maine Needs Inc's funders are still giving 2 years after their first grant; 47% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

53% of Maine Needs Inc's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $517k that is directly attributable, 64% of it comes from funders outside Maine, across 19 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $594k arriving through sponsors registered in 10 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
