What Madison Square Park Conservancy Inc does

Mission

Madison square park conservancy is the nonprofit entrusted by the city of new york to operate madison square park, a 6.2-acre public space in the heart of manhattan. Our mission is to conserve, maintain, and program this ever-evolving historic green space, including raising 100% of the park's operating budget. Anchoring a diverse and vibrant live-work community, madison square park is both an intimate neighborhood park and an international destination for 60,000 daily visitors. It is also a public garden, urban forest, wildlife habitat, public art exhibition space, a haven for children and pets to play, and one of new york city's most transcendent and welcoming places.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Public art: in 2025, mspc's public art program included two major sculptural commissions in madison square park. The first exhibition was fixed crane by nicole eisenman, a toppled industrial crane embellished with everyday objects. The second exhibition was improvisations in the park by larry bell, with six vibrantly colored glass cubes and nested arrangements. These exhibitions were accompanied by free programming, such as the annual public art symposium and public tours.

Madison square park is the living, breathing heart of our community, enhancing the health and wellbeing of all who visit and live or work nearby, as well as providing shelter and safe habitat for a surprisingly diverse population of wildlife.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 16 funders to 44 funders, grant income rose $111k → $1.6M.

15 of 121 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 30% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $327k from 10 payers (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Jewish Communal Fund). These are real filings, and they are not money MADISON SQUARE PARK CONSERVANCY INC raised.

From the IRS filings of MADISON SQUARE PARK CONSERVANCY INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 121 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

MADISON SQUARE PARK CONSERVANCY INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 12% of grant income, and it takes 7 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 7 funders to its left

32% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund MADISON SQUARE PARK CONSERVANCY INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

39% of MADISON SQUARE PARK CONSERVANCY INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 48% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $2.7M arriving through sponsors registered in 12 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
