01What it does

What Indego Africa Project does

Mission

Indego Africa Project, a nonprofit organization, has been propelling the creation, growth, and sustainability of women owned businesses in rwanda since 2007 and in ghana since 2016, providing employment through access to a global market for their hand made products, investing in their education, and providing funding resources to help them build their businesses. Over 2,500 artisans have partnered with indego africa since its inception. What began as a model to empower and educate women in post-genocide rwanda has grown into a commitment to help women, youth, and refugees in rwanda and ghana become successful entrepreneurs.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Vocational & business training:our programs help women in vulnerable communities, unemployed youth, and refugees build the skills to integrate and succeed in the global artisan economy with the following outcomes:-master multiple handicraft techniques through retraining. We provide opportunities for our artisan partners to continuously refresh, refine and expand their skills through retraining workshops and gain exposure to a variety of techniques and fibers.-form, register and run an independent woman-owned cooperative business with bank account set up.-become indego africa suppliers and produce handmade goods for the export market.-improve livelihoods for themselves and financial ability to support their families.-provide access to capital through the igiceri credit union in rwanda, founded by graduates of indego's leadership academy.

  2. Market access:providing our artisan partners with opportunities to earn steady, sustainable income is a key element of indego's market-based impact model and international supply chain. To further increase the work available for the artisans beyond our existing wholesale and retail distribution channels, in 2021 we added a third distribution channel for high volume custom orders for major brands. Our production teams in africa travel to and work directly with our artisan partners to explain product specifications and conduct quality control reviews, and prepare for monthly air cargo shipments to the u.s. This helps reinforce our partners' practical skills with the onsite guidance they need to create high quality products for the international export market.

  3. Business and community leadership:indego africa believes that educating women is the key to long-term empowerment and social change. Through customized education programs, indego's partners develop the knowledge and skills they need to run and scale their own businesses, become empowered entrepreneurs, and drive economic growth in their communities.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 6 funders to 11 funders, grant income rose $27k → $187k.

8 of 26 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 24% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of INDEGO AFRICA PROJECT’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

INDEGO AFRICA PROJECT has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 22% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

43% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund INDEGO AFRICA PROJECT.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 37% · 2018 44% · 2019 41% · 2020 21% · 2021 31% · 2022 35% · 2023 32% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

50% of INDEGO AFRICA PROJECT's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 69% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $295k arriving through sponsors registered in 8 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
