01What it does

What Health in Harmony does

Mission

Health in Harmony's mission is to reverse tropical rainforest deforestation for planetary health.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Indonesian Basin-Since 2007, Health In Harmony has collaborated with Indonesian partner ASRI and communities around Gunung Palung National Park to create and implement community-designed programs that support human health, alternative livelihoods, and environmental conservation. HIH, ASRI and the Indonesian Ministry of Health are working together to design a way to scale the model of investment in community-designed solutions and provide last mile health care to remote rainforest communities across Indonesia. Priority sites have been identified across Papua, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi for phased implementation from 2026 to 2028. These locations have been selected for their remoteness and their proximity to areas of significant ecological importance, setting the stage for expanded delivery of mobile clinics, last-mile healthcare, and integrated conservation investments.

  2. MADAGASCAR In fall 2019, HIH began working alongside communities around Manombo rainforest to realize their solutions to protect and restore the rainforest including, programs to address food security, alternative livelihoods, reforestation, and education. This protected area in Southeast Madagascar is home to nine endangered lemur species, as well as other threatened species. Manombo has been the stage for groundbreaking research in community-led, small-scale black soldier fly (BSF) farming since 2024, with outstanding results in terms of impact on one of the main reasons of deforestation in Madagascar hunger. In 2023, HIH signed a partnership agreement with Mdecins Sans Frontires / Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and Malagasy NGO Ny Tanintsika (NT) to begin an interdisciplinary pilot project in Ikongo, Madagascar. This new partnership combines HIH's Radical Listening and Planetary Health approach with MSF's medical expertise and NT's local systems and practice knowledge to protect and expand Madagascar's Ambositra-Vondrozo Forest Corridor and improve the health and socio-economic well-being of people. Expanding upon this partnership, Health In Harmony and its local affiliate…

  3. BRAZIL After building a successful track record of deploying health expeditions, supporting sustainable forest economies, and advocating for community rights in the Xingu Basin since 2020, SAMA Health In Harmony officially achieved legal incorporation as Brazil's first Planetary Health entity in November 2024. Building on this foundation, the organization is advancing its Planetary Health model by directly supporting community-designed conservation strategies within extractive reserves (RESEX Rio Iriri, RESEX Rio Xingu, and RESEX Riozinho do Anfrsio) and scaling through the People's Climate Coalition across nine unique Indigenous Territories: TI Apyterewa, TI Cachoeira Seca, TI Araribia, TI Tabalascada, TI Malacacheta, TI Canauanim, TI Urubu Branco, TI Saraua, and TI Xipaya. By merging ancestral wisdom with modern monitoring tools like drones and GPS, these Indigenous and traditional communities are leading their own territorial defense and driving exceptional returns on investment through averted carbon emissions. The total area protected by these combined initiatives is over 3.7 million hectares. Xingu was also at the forefront of advocacy in 2025 as COP30 took place in Belm,…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 13 funders to 36 funders, grant income rose $359k → $2.7M.

21 of 71 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 28% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Health in Harmony’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 71 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Health in Harmony has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 26% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

57% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Health in Harmony.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

55% of Health in Harmony's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 62% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $5.4M arriving through sponsors registered in 13 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
