What Legado Inc does
Mission
Legado is a woman-led, global nonprofit that works alongside indigenous peoples and local communities in places of ecological significance for biodiversity as they design and implement solutions of their choosing that benefit both their (cont'd schedule o) landscapes and their communities - an outcome we call thriving futures. We do this by activating the power of legacy around the world.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
Legado: namuli is legado's flagship program working with the lomwe communities encircling mount namuli, mozambique, a key biodiversity area. Namuli is where, in 2014, we began with a hard-earned $11,000 and a passionate international team of social scientists, biologists and more. Since then our legado:namuli team has worked with eight communities and 24,000 people on the mountain to realize the legacies they have defined. Our work with local community members of the region and partner organizations helped create our philosophy of legacy and belief that when people design and implement solutions of their choosing, they create sustainable outcomes called thriving futures.

Legado's partnership with planet indonesia starts by working with indigenous dayak communities in melawi district, nested in the two million-hectare arabella schwanner landscape, home to borneo's largest remaining orangutan population. Planet indonesia and legado will work together alongside four villages in melawi to secure land rights, reduce poverty, and lead across their holistic priorities towards thriving futures. Our partnership builds on planet indonesia's deep experience and commitment to community-led governance and resource management. Working together, we will create an updated community engagement and planning tool that embeds 360 community-led change into planet indonesia's core model approach. The tool will be used to help local communities articulate their legacies and the priorities they want to pursue for their own thriving futures. The resulting legacy plans will become the backbone for supporting local governance, grant proposals, and…

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.

Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2024 to 2025, from $1.5M to $2.3M (+53%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2020 7% · 2021 4%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
99% of LEGADO INC’s revenue is contributions — more reliant on donations than three-quarters of its peers (88% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 16 funders, grant income rose $139k → $655k.
13 of 32 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 49% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of LEGADO INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 32 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
LEGADO INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 16% of grant income, and it takes 5 funders to reach half.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 5 funders to its left
54% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund LEGADO INC.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 97% · 2018 93% · 2019 42% · 2020 64% · 2021 63% · 2022 26% · 2023 19% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
40% of LEGADO INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 50% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
LEGADO INC draws 100% of its grant income from funders outside New Hampshire, across 13 states in all.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.6M arriving through sponsors registered in 11 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
