Mission

Partner with communities and develop leaders to build a better world.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. International community program (icp) collaborated on 276 active projects and 57 completed projects in 33 countries in 2025. These projects are driven by 202 ewb usa chapters, comprised of 11,007 volunteers, based in the united states partnering directly with communities around the world to meet their self-identified needs. Technical assistance is focused on six project types: water, civil works, sanitation, agriculture, energy & structures. Ewb-usa's commitment to our hundreds of partnering communities is founded upon the premise that community-driven projects result in long lasting and sustainable infrastructure solutions. Throughout this partnership, we bring together volunteers and community members of all backgrounds and experience levels to promote educational and leadership opportunities not typically provided in traditional academic settings. Completed projects directly impacted 1,341,175 community members.

  2. Community engineering corps (cecorps) brings underserved communities and volunteer engineers together to advance local infrastructure solutions in the united states. Volunteers work with community associations, nonprofits and municipalities in both rural and urban areas. These individuals volunteer their time and expertise to assist communities that do not have the resources to access engineering services. With a strong commitment to community-driven projects, volunteers work alongside community members to design solutions to identified problems. In 2025, the program transitioned from a three-organization alliance (between awwa, asce and ewb-usa) to a program fully owned and operated by ewb-usa. During 2025, over 650 volunteers worked on more than 125 active projects impacting communities in 38 us states and territories. Completed projects directly impacted 144,169 community members.

Vet utilizes the skills and experience of a diverse pool of student and professional volunteers to implement engineering projects and consulting services. Our highly skilled volunteers work with communities to find appropriate solutions for their infrastructure needs. During 2025, a volunteer leadership development framework was created that defines a basic growth trajectory along which ewb-usa intentionally develops its volunteers.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 19 funders to 50 funders, grant income rose $1.1M → $3.2M.

32 of 118 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 34% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS-USA INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 118 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS-USA INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 20% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

62% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS-USA INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $7.7M arriving through sponsors registered in 21 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
