Mission

Through management of oakland zoo, the Conservation Society of California deepens connection with animals, saves wildlife, and inspires champions for the natural world.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

The zoo is home to over 700 animals that our staff provide industry leading care for to ensure their physical and social wellbeing. Conservation is core to our mission, and the zoo continues to focus its efforts on ten species including african elephants, chimpanzees, bison, african lions, california condors, and more. Our veterinary and animal care teams continue our local wildlife rescue work with oakland's city bird, the black crowned night heron, and we rescued our 30th mountain lion in 2025. Continued on schedule o.we are the first zoo in the united states to receive funding for a dedicated position to address animal welfare rescue and the wildlife trade, which is devasting species and habitats internationally. Last year we expanded our onsite guest education providing animal highlight programs to 30,000 guests and enhancing our docent offerings to increase knowledge of biodiversity. And we celebrated the one-year anniversary of the conservation education center we helped to open in uganda, which has now provided services for over 5,000 local…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 19 funders to 53 funders, grant income rose $1.4M → $2.6M.

28 of 131 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 45% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of CONSERVATION SOCIETY OF CALIFORNIA’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 131 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

CONSERVATION SOCIETY OF CALIFORNIA has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 26% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

47% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund CONSERVATION SOCIETY OF CALIFORNIA.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

40% of CONSERVATION SOCIETY OF CALIFORNIA's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 60% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $7.9M arriving through sponsors registered in 16 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
