01What it does

What Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort Inc does

Mission

The corporation is organized and operated for the purpose of providing immediate assistance to victims of natural disasters within the united states. The corporation focuses its relief primarily on the continental u.s. But the board of directors has the authority to extend those efforts to other areas if so needed. All assets and earnings are used exclusively for this purpose, including payments of expenses. No part of the net earnings or donations for the corporation are for the benefit of or distribution to its directors, except that the corporation is authorized to pay reasonable compensation for services rendered and to make payments and distributions in furtherance of the purpose set forth above. We help victims which for the most part, have lost their earthly possessions, have been displaced to the extent that they are homeless and in need of daily food and clothing. We propose to be an immediate responder to these situations, hoping to arrive with relief as soon as possible

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. In 2024, the busiest time of our year was in the 3rd and 4th quarter: hurricane beryl hit texas, followed by hurricane francine hitting louisiana in mid-september, few days later hurricane helene hit florida, georgia, north carolina, eastern tennessee, and western virginia, followed by hurricane milton hitting the eastern florida coast in the same month. We initially sent basic supplies, then sent household goods like furniture, appliances, water heaters, and mattress sets in the subsequent months. We helped areas in california, hawaii, new mexico, and texas affected by wildfires. We also assisted after flooding took place in iowa, nebraska, new mexico, texas and west virginia. A total of 232 shipments of supplies and household goods, and truckloads of water were sent to 72 different counties/or townships in 19 different states.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 13 funders to 22 funders, grant income rose $160k → $285k.

23 of 59 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 85% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of CHURCHES OF CHRIST DISASTER RELIEF EFFORT INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 59 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

CHURCHES OF CHRIST DISASTER RELIEF EFFORT INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 28% of grant income, and it takes 5 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 5 funders to its left

90% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund CHURCHES OF CHRIST DISASTER RELIEF EFFORT INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

85% of CHURCHES OF CHRIST DISASTER RELIEF EFFORT INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $2.0M arriving through sponsors registered in 17 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
