01What it does

What Caringmatters Inc does

Mission

Caringmatters provides social supports and community education so that no one dies or grieves alone. Our trained and screened volunteers provide compassionate support, without charge, to any montgomery county adult or child facing serious illness or grieving the loss of a loved one.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Volunteer helping hands is caringmatters' hospice support program that provides community-based social and emotional support, free of charge, to montgomery county residents with serious, life-limiting illness. These individuals are facing an acute decline in functioning or progression of disease and can benefit from extra support. Services include but are not limited to: companionship and emotional support, assistance with household tasks, respite care, patient advocacy, and limited transportation to medical appointments. While we do not provide medical services, we supplement medical hospice and also support patients who are still pursuing curative treatment. Justrides is a newer program that provides transportation to medical appointments for cancer patients, primarily those who are being treated at the aquilino cancer center or white oak cancer center, both part of adventist healthcare. Caregiver support includes support groups and 1:1 mentoring. These services are delivered by trained volunteers and offered both virtually and in-person.

  2. Caringmatters' adult bereavement support groups are facilitated by trained volunteers, allowing participants to meet others who are also grieving, share their stories, and learn from one another. Groups are organized to bring together people grieving similar losses, such as spousal/partner loss, parent loss, or loss by suicide and are delivered virtually, in-person, and/or hybrid. Caringmatters' former caregivers retreat is for family/friend primary caregivers whose loved one has died within the past two years. This unique weekend retreat, offered free of charge, enables participants to connect with other former caregivers who have had similar experiences caring for seriously ill loved ones. Therapeutic group activities include grief support, commemoration of loved ones, self-care, relaxation, and strategies for refocusing on life post-caregiving and rebuilding one's identity.

  3. Grief clubs are seven-week support groups designed to help children in grades k-12 explore their feelings, develop healthy coping strategies, and find comfort and safety in knowing that they are not alone. These groups are facilitated by trained caringmatters volunteers in partnership with montgomery county public schools, independent schools, and other community-based organizations. Camp erin montgomery county, held once a year, is an overnight weekend camp for grieving children, ages 6-17, that is part of a national network of camp erin programs. The camp offers age-appropriate discussions and creative, fun-filled activities designed to help children share their feelings with peers who have had similar experiences. Camp erin montgomery county is a partnership between caringmatters and bar-t, inc. Caringmatters' family nights are designed for families who have experienced the death of a loved one. Each workshop is held prior to a major holiday so families can learn coping skills, plan for how to handle celebrations, and mark the absence of their loved one. 03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 9 funders to 18 funders, grant income rose $69k → $188k.

8 of 41 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 32% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of CARINGMATTERS INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 41 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

CARINGMATTERS INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 10% of grant income, and it takes 7 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 7 funders to its left

36% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund CARINGMATTERS INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

55% of CARINGMATTERS INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 71% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $466k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
