01What it does

What Visionspring Inc does

Mission

To provide eyeglasses and vision screening to underserved populations though global programs.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. Visionspring works to increase lifelong earning, learning, safety, and well-being through eyeglasses for people vulnerable to poverty. In 2023, we screened more than 2.6 million people and corrected the vision of nearly 1.9 million, providing eyeglasses to low-income earners and learners so they can see well and do well. More than half of these individuals received their first-ever pair of eyeglasses. This year also marked our total distribution of eyeglasses to 12 million people and unlocked an estimated $2.6 billion in income-earning potential for households living on less than $4 per day since the organization's founding in 2001.in 2023, visionspring continued its focus on optical services and eyeglasses sales, growing at a rate of 16% year-on-year. Our target customers were reached in over 20 countries, including our largest markets in india, bangladesh, and sub-saharan africa. Visionspring's program activities are implemented through two models: vision access programs and institutional partnerships.in 2023, our vision access programs (vap) corrected the vision of 846,000 people in workplaces, factories, schools, transportation hubs, and rural and informal settlements.…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 9 funders to 24 funders, grant income rose $1.3M → $3.8M.

17 of 49 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 54% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of VISIONSPRING INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 49 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

VISIONSPRING INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 41% of grant income and the top three 60%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

65% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund VISIONSPRING INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

Where its funders are

54% of VISIONSPRING INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $18M that is directly attributable, 64% of it comes from funders outside New York, across 10 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $21M arriving through sponsors registered in 13 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
