What Uptown Tenderloin Inc does

Mission

The mission of the uptown tenderloin, inc. Dba tenderloin museum (tlm) is to promote the history and character of the tenderloin neighborhood by offering educational, artistic, and charitable activities... (see sched o)

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. The tenderloin museum is a community-centered institution dedicated to preserving the history, diversity, and resilience of one of san francisco's most vibrant and misunderstood neighborhoods. We tell stories of artists, activists, immigrant communities, and working-class life-not from the outside looking in, but in partnership with the people who live and work here. Through exhibitions, public programs, walking tours, and arts initiatives, we create meaningful cultural experiences for communities often excluded from them, while inviting the broader city to engage with the tenderloin, support local businesses, and see the neighborhood's cultural legacy in a new light.

  2. Over the past decade, the tenderloin museum has built a strong record of community-centered arts programming that has helped transform how audiences understand the tenderloin neighborhood. What began as a small cultural initiative has grown into a dynamic institution producing 40-50 public programs annually, 5-7 gallery exhibitions, approximately 50 resident-led walking tours, and roughly 90-100 theatrical performances each year through the museum's dedicated performance venue. The museum's contemporary gallery regularly presents exhibitions featuring tenderloin artists and projects that illuminate the neighborhood's cultural history.

  3. In addition to exhibitions, the museum produces a wide range of public arts programming that reflects the diversity of the tenderloin community. Programs include live music performances through the sounds of the tenderloin series, film screenings, artist talks, and community celebrations that highlight the neighborhood's cultural traditions and artistic innovation.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 4 funders to 5 funders, grant income rose $31k → $46k.

3 of 20 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 10% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of UPTOWN TENDERLOIN INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

UPTOWN TENDERLOIN INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 45% of grant income and the top three 66%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

28% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund UPTOWN TENDERLOIN INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $89k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
