What Up With Trees Inc does

Mission

To beautify and improve the urban environment in the tulsa metropolitan area by planting and maintaining trees on public property and educating the community about the environmental, health, and livability benefits of tulsa's urban forest.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. PLANTING AND MAINTAINING TREES in the GREATER TULSA AREA: All residents and visitors to the Tulsa Metro area benefit from this program because the thousands of trees planted and maintained by Up with Trees contribute to a healthier environment and more livable community. This program also increases the city's canopy cover and serves to educate the community about the benefits of preserving and promoting Tulsa's Urban Forest.

After four weeks of classroom and hands-on training (including the art and science of pruning), successful candidates become part of an elite volunteer corps that plants and maintains trees in parks and other locations in the Tulsa metro area. Citizen Foresters also become enthusiastic advocates of urban forestry awareness and education.

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 9 funders to 21 funders, grant income fell $1.9M → $240k.

3 of 51 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 4% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of UP WITH TREES INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 51 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

UP WITH TREES INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 68% of grant income and the top three 76%; half comes from just 1 funder.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $104k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
