As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Ethiopia operations: we partner with rural communities to create sustainable pathways out of poverty by:1) delivering high-quality health education and empowering community health workers so that people can live long and healthy lives.2) restoring the opportunity for children and adults to learn through high quality early childhood, primary, and vocational education.3) equipping men and women to earn a predictable income through business development training and savings groups to create financial resilience.4) building the capacity of community leaders to maintain program initiatives, so that communities can sustain gains and thrive for years to come.as ethiopia continues to react to the challenges created by the covid pandemic and internal conflict, our programming continued to address widening inequities, as noted in the multidimensional poverty index (mpi). In 2025, we saw expansion of our savings groups for peer-to-peer lending and business development, as 541 women participated across 30groups. 106 women launched new businesses with loans from their savings groups. As women build financial literacy, so too, do families increase household assets, build savings for crises, and…

  2. Awareness and engagement: the awareness and engagement program works to mobilize volunteers and educate the public about the realities of extreme poverty and the pathways through which individuals and communities can be empowered to break its generational cycle. We recruit, train, and deploy volunteers to serve alongside communities affected by extreme poverty. Through events, storytelling, and digital content, the organization reaches individuals, faith communities, and other groups across the united states with the message that extreme poverty is not inevitable and that people living in poverty can transform their lives with the right resources and opportunities.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 6 funders, grant income rose $5k → $106k.

7 of 13 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 34% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of THREE ROOTS INTERNATIONAL’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

THREE ROOTS INTERNATIONAL leans on a few funders — its largest provides 55% of grant income and the top three 82%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

38% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund THREE ROOTS INTERNATIONAL.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

25% of THREE ROOTS INTERNATIONAL's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 62% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $226k arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
