Skilled nursing services - rehabilitation/skilled nursing services have been at the core of the society's services over its 100-year history. The society approaches care for the spiritual, emotional and social dimensions of our skilled nursing residents is as important as the physical care that is provided to society residents every hour of every day. Services provided in society skilled nursing facilities include comprehensive professional nursing care; rehabilitation services; as well as a high quality of related services such as dietary, recreational and other activities; medication administration; and other services that meet the holistic needs of those the society is called to serve. The society is the largest not-for-profit provider of rehabilitation/skilled nursing services in the united states. But size is not the society's objective. Instead, seeking to meet the needs of "older persons and others in need" to improve their well-being - as they define it - remains paramount. Statistically, the society provided a total of 1,730,888 skilled nursing home days of care and service in 2024. The society continues to reinvest much of its revenue to build and revitalize its…

With about 10,000 people retiring each and every day in the united states - and with ever-increasing numbers occurring in future years - the provision of senior living/housing will take on increasing importance in years to come. The society recognizes this growth and has made expansion of senior living services and locations a major part of this corporate strategic planning. Campuses feature attractive grounds; a variety of common space and multi-purpose rooms for resident and family interaction and community gatherings; libraries and reading rooms; dining services; cable tv and phone service; and the availability of computer/internet services to allow and encourage electronic connectivity with family and friends. Further, various senior learning opportunities are provided on senior living campuses in addition to the spiritual and social programs offered in rehabilitation/skilled nursing services and assisted living.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2019 to 2020, from $1.6B to $1.4B (−12%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base narrowed from 18 funders to 9 funders, grant income fell $759k → $584k.
20 of 48 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 28% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
Left out of every figure on this page: $37M from 4 payers (the payer shares this organization's board, largest The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Foundation). These are real filings, and they are not money THE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN GOOD SAMARITAN SOCIETY raised.

How concentrated its funding is
THE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN GOOD SAMARITAN SOCIETY has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 30% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left
100% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund THE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN GOOD SAMARITAN SOCIETY.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 41% · 2018 41% · 2019 52% · 2020 22% · 2021 22% · 2022 25% · 2023 26% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
38% of THE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN GOOD SAMARITAN SOCIETY's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 50% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
THE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN GOOD SAMARITAN SOCIETY draws 79% of its grant income from funders outside South Dakota, across 19 states in all.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.5M arriving through sponsors registered in 16 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
