What Santa Maria Hostel Inc does
Mission
To provide indigent women with housing and treatment.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Program
On its FY2024 return the organization reported starting a significant new program and a significant change in how it conducts a program.
The organization has undertaken two significant initiatives that will enhance service delivery in the coming years, both in houston and austin. First the organization launched the I-care clinic, a collaboration with baylor college of medicine, to provide integrated physical and mental health services for women and their families affected by substance use. The clinic offers primary care, pediatrics, medication-assisted treatment, psychiatry and behavioral health services and recovery support. Private fundraising fully funded the clinic's renovations and medical equipment, with all improvements completed as of the end of fy24. The I-care clinic became fully operational during fy25 and continues to offer services onsite at the organization's primary sud residential treatment facility, 2605 parker road, houston, with over 2,800 medical visits during fy25. Second, the organization is continuing to expand services to the austin/travis county area. This expansion began with the implementation of caring for two community services in fy24 and is now poised to extend to residential and outpatient substance use treatment in fy26. A multi-year capital campaign was launched in fy24 and in february 2025, the organization purchased a 70 acre multi-building former for-profit treatment facility in manor, tx, located 12 miles north of austin. A 17 acre parcel of that property, with the greatest concentration of buildings, was then prepared for state inspection and licensed by tx health and…

Santa maria, along with many other treatment providers across the state of texas, has been and continues to be significantly impacted by the federal funding cuts announced in fy25. The loss of funding in fy 25 was $285,647 from programs forced to close early in the fiscal year, but the loss during the next 5 year funding cycle is far greater. Tx hhsc cut funding for this 5 year cycle by 45.86% over the prior contracted amount, equating to a decrease of $3,647,271 for each of the five years. This decrease in funding necessitated strategic cost cutting to be undertaken by our organization in order to positively impact our sustainability. During august 2025 we closed and later sold our single women's treatment facility at 2005 jacquelyn, putting 26 fulltime staff on a rif effective 8.31.25. We also closed our 2605 parker road facility residential detox unit due to the decrease in funding, decreased the total organization treatment capacity from 164 licensed beds to 106, and consolidated all houston region treatment operations at our 2605 parker road facility. To enhance sustainability of our new central texas treatment facility, still in the capital campaign and planning phase, we strategically chose to sell 53 acres of the newly purchased 70 acre parcel in manor, tx. Operations are now scheduled to begin at that campus during the fall of 2026 on the remaining 17 acre parcel.
Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 3).
Santa maria provides a full continuum of services to meet each woman or family where they are on their recovery journey, from community based prevention and intervention services for children and families, to residential and outpatient addiction treatment for women and their children, to long term housing and recovery support. Today, santa maria is one of texas' largest providers of substance use treatment services for women, and one of the only programs in the state where a mother may bring her children with her into treatment. Santa maria provides services for nearly 12,106 women, children, and family members each year to help them achieve long-term health and wellness and reach their full potential in life.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.

How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 10 funders to 23 funders, grant income rose $345k → $1.5M.
10 of 54 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 4% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of SANTA MARIA HOSTEL INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 54 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
SANTA MARIA HOSTEL INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 28% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left
80% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund SANTA MARIA HOSTEL INC.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 62% · 2018 58% · 2019 41% · 2020 38% · 2021 25% · 2022 32% · 2023 37% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
60% of SANTA MARIA HOSTEL INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 52% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
96% of SANTA MARIA HOSTEL INC's grant income comes from Texas funders.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $401k arriving through sponsors registered in 9 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
