01What it does

What Rayo de Sol Inc does

Mission

Rayo de Sol works with children, adolescents and adults in vulnerable communities in Matagalpa, Nicaragua, where poverty levels are high and social services are extremely limited. Currently, the organization implements five programs, including: Spiritual Development, Educational Quality, Integral Community Health, Youth in Action and Community Development. These programs are designed to respond to the pressing needs in these communities and improve the quality of life of more than 5,000 people. Rayo de Sol currently provides program services in 35 schools and communities in Matagalpa, striving to improve health, education and nutrition services for the most impoverished communities, as well as creating new economic opportunities for adults. This work is done in coordination with local organizations, community leaders and public agencies. Since beginning work in Nicaragua, significant improvements have been documented in nutritional levels, health and hygiene and permanence of children

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. Rayo de Sol implements health, education, nutrition and community development programs in vulnerable communities in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. Most notably, program services are provided for more than 5,200 preschool and primary students, which has helped to improve retention and promotion rates. All children receive nutritious meals every school day, which has reduced malnourishment by more than ten percent. Rayo de Sol also offers scholarships for more than 800 high school and university students. This allows them to stay in school and continue their education, since their families cant afford to support their academic efforts. There were also 250 adults that participated in vocational training and small business development courses. This creates new economic opportunities so that families can break the cycles of chronic poverty. The organization treated over 4500 patients at their community clinics and provided program services to a population of approximately 10,000 people.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 4 funders to 8 funders, grant income rose $24k → $356k.

7 of 14 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 88% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of RAYO DE SOL INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

RAYO DE SOL INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 69% of grant income and the top three 86%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

94% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund RAYO DE SOL INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

88% of RAYO DE SOL INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $225k that is directly attributable, 56% of it comes from Georgia funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.7M arriving through sponsors registered in 6 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
