01What it does

What Pet Helpers Inc does

Mission

To end euthanasia for all adoptable cats and dogs; providing low cost spay/neuter surgeries, offering humane education programs, pursuing animal cruelty prosecution and initiating animal welfare legislation.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Adoption - including rescue and shelter:the dogs and cats that enter the pet helpers shelter can be strays, transfers from other shelters, or animals that have to be surrendered because of changing family situations where the animals cannot receive adequate care. Increasingly, dogs and cats are being transferred to pet helpers from open admission shelters that have reached capacity. In these cases, pet helpers directly saves the lives of healthy animals who would otherwise be euthanized. Pet helpers has operated as a no kill shelter since it was opened in 1978.

  2. Spay/neuter clinic:pet helpers' mission is to provide high quality spay/neuter surgeries at an affordable price to all families in the lowcountry. This is the most effective way to reduce the companion animal overpopulation problem. Besides these services to the general population, pet helpers aggresively works to increase accessibility of spay/neuter surgeries to areas of the lowcountry with high rates of pet reproduction. Pet helpers also offers a low cost vaccine clinic that provides some preventative care services such as brief general examinations, heart worm testing, flea control, microchipping, nail trims, etc.

  3. Community outreach:levi's legacy: provides small grants to pet owners who have pets facing sudden illness or injury and would not be able to seek veterinary care without financial support. Food bank: pet helpers' food bank provides food to low and fixed-income pet owners and those facing temporary financial hardship, to help keep pets in their homes. Tnr: pet helpers' trap-neuter-release (tnr) program provides trap rentals, spay/neuter surgeries, microchipping and vaccinations to help control the overpopulation of community (feral) cats. Levi's legacy: provides small grants to pet owners who have pets facing sudden illness or injury and would not be able to seek veterinary care without financial support.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 11 funders to 25 funders, grant income rose $245k → $392k.

10 of 67 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 13% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of PET HELPERS INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 67 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

PET HELPERS INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 58% of grant income and the top three 66%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

73% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund PET HELPERS INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $322k arriving through sponsors registered in 8 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
