What North East Trees Inc does
Mission
In 2024, our work made a lasting impact on both people and the environment. Together with our community, we planted 2,739 new plants and trees, ensuring future shade, cleaner air, and greener neighborhoods. We also cared for 7,442 trees, strengthening the health of our existing urban forest. To extend our reach, we distributed 981 plants and trees for community members to steward in their own spaces. In total, we actively cared for 204.24 acres of habitat, protecting and restoring vital green spaces that support biodiversity, provide refuge for wildlife, and create healthier communities.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.
Programs
NET's Urban Forestry Program focuses on expanding the Los Angeles urban tree canopy to help cool down and beautify under resourced communities. NET plants and maintains street trees along neighborhood streets and gives fruit and shade trees to residents. These trees provide not just the emotional health benefits urban green spaces support, they help manage stormwater and reduce urban heat, which in turn decreases energy costs. Through outreach, education and workforce development, NET teaches people how to plant and care for their trees, about the importance and benefits of trees, and how to develop and care for their urban forest.
$2,148,159 spent65% of program spendingNET's Parks and Open Space Program designs and builds public parks and green spaces and implements water conservation projects following Nature Based Solutions and Low Impact Development design principles. For example, the installation of bioswales helps water travel on paths so it can penetrate the earth before it runs off to the streets and into storm drains. Schools, agencies, foundations, and the City and County of Los Angeles are among the beneficiaries of NET's work eliminating invasive species, planting drought resistant native plants and trees to restore the habitat, and installing site attributes such as playgrounds, public information signage, landscaping and boulders, sidewalks, and drinking fountains.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2020, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2020, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2023 to 2024, from $2.9M to $4.2M (+45%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2020 83% · 2021 67% · 2022 81% · 2023 39% · 2024 78%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
99% of North East Trees Inc’s revenue is contributions — more reliant on donations than three-quarters of its peers (88% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 12 funders, grant income rose $10k → $404k.
9 of 26 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 30% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of North East Trees Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 25 of 26 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
North East Trees Inc has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 18% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left
67% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund North East Trees Inc.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 100% · 2018 55% · 2019 99% · 2020 40% · 2021 34% · 2022 33% · 2023 30% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
40% of North East Trees Inc's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 50% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
North East Trees Inc draws 58% of its grant income from funders outside California, across 8 states in all.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $395k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
