What Nicolas Fund for Education does

Mission

Nicolas Fund for Education (nfe) provides students with the skills and opportunities they need to rise out of poverty and transform their lives. Nfe is creating a generation of young leaders who can help bring about real and lasting change in their communities.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. In 2025, the school had 175 students. 24 students graduated from nicolas christian school's high school and 28 students graduated from our junior high. Since 2015, we have had 152 students graduate from high school and 207 graduate from junior high. Nicolas christian school provides high quality rigorous education in conformance with guatemalan ministry of education standards. The nicolas christian school provides safe transportation for students from their village to the school in a nearby town which is approximately 40 minutes away and back home again at the end of the day. (continued on scheduled o)these students live in a remote agricultural region in the highlands of guatemala where most young people do not have an opportunity to receive higher education beyond the sixth grade for financial reasons. In this region mired in poverty, only 5-13% of the rural poor graduate from high school and less than 1% attend university. Due to poor road conditions, we are operating a satellite school in a remote village and digital curriculum from nicolas christian school.

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 3 funders to 6 funders, grant income rose $84k → $126k.

6 of 11 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 93% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of NICOLAS FUND FOR EDUCATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

NICOLAS FUND FOR EDUCATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 84% of grant income and the top three 95%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

93% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund NICOLAS FUND FOR EDUCATION.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

93% of NICOLAS FUND FOR EDUCATION's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $177k that is directly attributable, 94% of it comes from Washington funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $2.3M arriving through sponsors registered in 6 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
