What Newport Beach Public Library Foundation does

Mission

The Newport Beach Public Library Foundation funds valuable library resources, programs and services, and engages the community through the creation and sponsorship of diverse literary, cultural and intellectual programs.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

On its FY2024 return the organization reported starting a significant new program.

The library foundation assumed responsibility for the reserve funds of the former pals4pal support organization for the newport beach public library's project adult literacy program. Pals4pal ceased operations. The library foundation accepted the funds to be managed and distributed to the library under its existing investment and distribution policy governing its endowment.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 2).

  1. The foundation presented 47 programs in the 2024-2025 season for the newport beach public library with 35 being free to the public. Programming includes the 28th season of the distinguished speaker series, witte lectures, and the 11th season of the library live author series. These two series were sold out. Free community programs include the financial literacy workshops, medicine in our backyard, spotlight on science, and the book discussion group. All four community programs had significantly increased attendance. Additionally, the foundation is in an agreement with the city of newport beach to garner community support to fund 50% of a new library lecture hall and civic auditorium. This capital campaign is in addition to its annual fundraising to support programming and the library's annual grant request for capital improvements and additional patron services. 03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base held at 16 funders, grant income rose $175k → $967k.

12 of 44 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 60% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of NEWPORT BEACH PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 44 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

NEWPORT BEACH PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 39% of grant income and the top three 69%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

61% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund NEWPORT BEACH PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

60% of NEWPORT BEACH PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $2.5M arriving through sponsors registered in 9 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
