What Maui Nui Marine Resource Council Inc does
Mission
Maui nui marine resource council is a maui-based nonprofit working in partnership with the community to protect and restore our coastal and ocean ecosystems. We focus on collaborative, place-based solutions to achieve clean water, healthy coral reefs, and abundant native fish across maui nui.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.
Programs
Ocean water quality monitoring program:mnmrc co-manages hui o ka wai ola, a unique community-based ocean water quality monitoring program that tests coastal sites every three weeks across leeward maui. In 2024, the program expanded from 35 to 41 sites, including continued monitoring at seven locations in lahaina to assess ongoing impacts from the 2023 wildfire. The hui also completed its first full year of monitoring on the neighboring island of lana'I. All data are collected under strict quality assurance protocols and submitted to the hawai'I department of health clean water branch. Since launching in 2016, hui o ka wai ola has collected over 4,822 water samples to help guide pollution management, resource protection, and community awareness.
$316,637 spent37% of program spendingCoral reef restoration & assessment:mnmrc carried out coral reef restoration and assessment activities to support the long-term health and resilience of maui nui's nearshore ecosystems. In preparation for establishing community-based coral reef areas in north kihei, mnmrc led community outreach, developed site plans, and conducted training in reef restoration techniques. Using standardized cramp and fahu methods, the organization completed 130 reef and fish surveys along leeward maui, collecting and analyzing over 79,000 data points. All data were submitted to state agencies and partners to support decision-making and track the effectiveness of land-based pollution mitigation. Mnmrc also partnered with flying fish technologies to conduct high-resolution benthic mapping of maui's entire leeward coast using underwater drones and ai, with extra mapping performed at targeted reefs in lahaina. These efforts generated critical baseline data and strengthened local capacity for informed reef management and community-led conservation.
$170,742 spent20% of program spendingReef-friendly landscaping program:mnmrc developed hawai'I's first reef-friendly landscaping (rfl) certification program to help landscaping professionals, property owners, and agricultural businesses transition from synthetic chemicals to natural land care practices. The program aims to improve soil and plant health while reducing the amount of toxic runoff that reaches the ocean and nearby coral reefs. Following the successful implementation of 12 pilot properties including hotels, resorts, condos, farms, golf courses, and construction sites, mnmrc launched the rfl certification course in both virtual and hybrid formats. The course curriculum, developed with local industry experts, covers soil health, native and invasive plants, fertilizers, planting techniques, and the impacts of pollution and climate change. In 2024, mnmrc began an 18-month partnership with maui gold pineapple, marking the first major agricultural operation to adopt rfl practices, with early results showing improvements in soil condition and plant performance.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2019 to 2020, from $540k to $757k (+40%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2017 32% · 2018 45% · 2019 41% · 2020 73% · 2021 60% · 2022 61% · 2023 63% · 2024 66%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
98% of MAUI NUI MARINE RESOURCE COUNCIL INC’s revenue is contributions — more reliant on donations than three-quarters of its peers (88% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 12 funders, grant income rose $40k → $500k.
7 of 30 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 41% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of MAUI NUI MARINE RESOURCE COUNCIL INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
MAUI NUI MARINE RESOURCE COUNCIL INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 47% of grant income and the top three 78%; half comes from just 2 funders.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left
93% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund MAUI NUI MARINE RESOURCE COUNCIL INC.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2018 92% · 2019 73% · 2020 49% · 2021 59% · 2022 79% · 2023 55% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
60% of MAUI NUI MARINE RESOURCE COUNCIL INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 40% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
MAUI NUI MARINE RESOURCE COUNCIL INC draws 90% of its grant income from funders outside Hawaii, across 9 states in all.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $732k arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
