What Kindersmile Foundation Inc does

Mission

The mission of kindersmile foundation is to provide underserved children with access to comprehensive dental care and educate children and their families on the importance of dental hygiene.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. KINDERSMILE ORAL HEALTH PROGRAM (KSOHP) KSOHP is the flagship program of our nonprofit foundation. With values of education, intervention, and prevention as methods to combat oral health care inequity, KSOHP increases access to oral health care for underserved children, regardless of insurance status, by bringing dental care to schools or community centers at no cost to caretakers. With parental consent, offsite visits in schools include oral health education, nutritional counseling, dental exams, caries risk assessment, prophylaxis (dental cleaning), topical flouride treatments and sealants where appropriate. In 2025 KSOHP crucially linked 2,999 children to a permanent barrier-free Dental Home at KinderSmile Community Oral Health Centers in Bloomfield, Newark, or Trenton, where they are scheduled for follow-up vists and continuity of care. The oral health education component of KSOHP is developed by KinderSmile Foundation in conjunction with the existing curricula used by participating programs to be age-appropriate, engaging, and long-lasting in developmental impact. Education provided to children, parents, and caregivers addresses the importance of early intervention and…

  2. KINDERSMILE PERINATAL HEALTH & WELLNESS PROGRAM (PHWP) PHWP breaks the dangerous cycle of untreated dental diseases by empowering uninsured and Medicaid-insured mothers from pregnancy and up to 3 years postpartum, with informative, personal, and culturally sensitive training about the importance of oral health and its impact on the developing fetus and young children. Upon completion of our training program, qualified mothers can earn free adult dental care to restore their smiles at one of our Dental Homes. Eligible mothers qualify for free dental care including dental exam, cleaning, and follow up treatments proposed by the dentist. Mothers become financially responsible once grant funds are expended, or starting with their recall appointment. Dental care at KinderSmile Foundation is offered at a significantly dicounted rate for families. The program includes a crucial link to a permanent Dental Home for mothers and their children, to ensure continuity of care. The PHWP in Mercer and Essex counties collaborates with more than 80 organizations throughout the state of New Jersey, in order to successfully reach the at-risk perinatal community. Educational sessions are provided to…

  3. KINDERSMILE COMMUNITY SERVICE LEARNING PROGRAM (CSLP) CSLP offers mentorship and guidance to students from high school to college and beyond, to acquire leadership skills, and share in the mission and goals of KinderSmile Foundation. CSLP members have the option to participate in internships with the Foundation, to help teach children about oral hygiene at KinderSmile Community Oral Health Centers, and to volunteer at local health fairs and community events such as Give Kids a Smile Day. Students become aware of the importance of Public Health Dentistry and community service in order to bridge the gap in access to care for at-risk families. Dedicated CSLP volunteers may eleveate their roles within the organization and serve as ambassadors for oral health in New Jersey and abroad. Students become cognizant of the lack of access to oral health among at-risk children and families, and the impact on their overall health. Thye gain a greater appreciation for their blessings by having the opportunity to join KinderSmile Foundations annual global outreach trips and visiting countries such as Haiti, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Uganda. 03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 5 funders to 18 funders, grant income rose $81k → $579k.

6 of 35 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 23% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of KINDERSMILE FOUNDATION INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 35 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

KINDERSMILE FOUNDATION INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 24% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

77% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund KINDERSMILE FOUNDATION INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

53% of KINDERSMILE FOUNDATION INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 57% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $600k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
