Programs

In 2024, the foundation created the heal the healers fund grant program. The program provides support to professionals working directly with survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse who are grappling with the effects of secondary trauma.

The initiative operates on the fundamental principle that everyone deserves autonomy over their body and image as one of the leading organizations on policy reform against image-based abuse (iba), joyful heart convened regular meetings with two stakeholder groups one for federal policy and one for state to share information and work collectively to develop policies protecting survivors. In addition, staff monitored relevant policy progress and distributed legislative updates to advocates in the field. In 2024, 44 iba bills passed in 30 states. In addition to the state-level bills, joyful heart advocated for multiple bills at the federal level, including the shield act, the defiance act, the take it down act, and the preventing deepfakes of intimate images act.in addition, as part of our flagship policy program, the end the backlog campaign, joyful heart helped pass nine bills related to rape kit reform in eight states. 03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base narrowed from 31 funders to 30 funders, grant income fell $893k → $893k.

27 of 141 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 53% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of JOYFUL HEART FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 141 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

JOYFUL HEART FOUNDATION has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 17% of grant income, and it takes 7 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 7 funders to its left

66% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund JOYFUL HEART FOUNDATION.

Where its funders are

53% of JOYFUL HEART FOUNDATION's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $3.0M that is directly attributable, 89% of it comes from funders outside New York, across 30 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $3.4M arriving through sponsors registered in 18 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
