What Harbor House Ministries Inc does

Mission

Harbor House is a Christian community development organization that provides a safe place for opportunities, resources, and relationships to be shared so that all families in Oakland can flourish. Since 1972, Harbor House has faithfully served thousands of families through high quality programs that nurture the heart, soul, mind and body. We offer after-school tutoring and enrichment, summer day camp, leadership development, food and clothing distribution, and spiritual formation opportunities.Harbor House was founded by Olive Freeman, a fourth grade teacher in Oakland who noticed that some of her students lacked basic necessities. Compelled by her faith, Olive responded by gathering food, clothing, and books and handing them out from the trunk of her car. What started out as one woman responding to needs in the community, is now a multi-faceted community development organization offering hope to hundreds of families each year. HARBOR HOUSE IS LOCATED IN THE SAN ANTONIO DISTRICT OF OAK

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

  4. [Continued from Form 990 Page 2]Summer Day Camp (June July)Our summer day camp runs Monday through Friday for five weeks in the summertime, offering elementary students a safe, fun, and enriching place to be. Each summer has a different theme that sets the stage for the camp. Day campers are treated to skits, Bible stories, songs, crafts, and memory verse to reinforce the themes. They also take special field trips each Friday which help them to get out of their neighborhood and experience a bit of adventure.

  5. Youth Internship Program [Continued from Form 990 Page 2]Through YLP, we aim to develop thriving and competent teens who are growing into their potential and becoming agents of change in their community. We recognize that many teens in our community need a safe place where they can feel valued and cared for while gaining valuable life skills, receive academic encouragement, and develop positive relationships. YLP provides that to local high school students looking for a linked learning opportunity in the field of education.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 6 funders to 13 funders, grant income rose $51k → $321k.

8 of 28 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 32% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Harbor House Ministries Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 27 of 28 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Harbor House Ministries Inc has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 18% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

52% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Harbor House Ministries Inc.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $585k arriving through sponsors registered in 8 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
